Couple of updates

Today I ran the lightbox through my CNC for what will be the largest backboard I've built to-date.

I also did a little more work on another lightbox that was waiting for the Xmas rush to come to an end.

Christmas Rush, it's on!

OK, here we go! I won't have lots of time to do individual updates for all the cabinets in the shop so I will be posting an update once a week picturing what has been done for that week.

Here is the first update:

I've recently added a CNC machine to my shop so the level of accuracy I'm able to achieve has increased as you'll see from these pictures.

Lil Wayne

This cabinet is being built for a local friend. It's also the first one I've done which is based on a music personality. So far the pattern is attached to the door blanks which I glued up earlier today.

A nice email

There are several reasons I started Custom Dart Cabinets several years back. Number one is that I enjoy building dart cabinets but how many could I really build for myself? Ha! Actually, I've probably built close to 10 pieces for myself over the years. There was three "dart stadiums" in my house at one point! My wife had some influence in that number being brought down to one!

The other is the joy it brings the customer to have something that nobody else has! I often don't hear from customers once their cabinet arrives. In these cases I email them to make sure they were happy, and then I get the big "thank you" email. This in return brings me joy to know I built them something they are going to show-off to their family and friends! Below is the comment I got the day the recently finished "Steelers" cabinet arrived at the customers house. This was not solicited by me and that makes it all the better to find in my inbox.

"AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!! Your pictures did not do it justice! It looks 10 times better than your pics. Seriously, fantastic job"

Sometimes, it takes me much longer to build a cabinet that I initially estimate. I don't intend this to be the case but I don't want to ship something out that isn't what I would expect to see myself. Much of my work on these cabinets is done in what spare time I have. It's certainly not something I am making a living at but more a labor of love.

So thank you for the kind words, Brian. It really makes my day to see that something I built for someone is appreciated this much!

Peace.

Steelers Cabinet

This cabinet is finished and ready for shipping. Here are some more pictures.

It may be harder to see but the door on the left has a peg score system which the customer wanted for playing baseball

The cabinet has 3 strips of LED lights installed. This shot was taken with all the lights off in my basement. The LEDs provide more than enough light for playing darts!

This cabinet was fun to build and has plenty of unique characteristics that you would never get from a stock dart cabinet.

Staining Regan

This weekend I started staining the cabinet. This will receive the standard two-tone stain the family crest models have had on previous models. This one should be ready to ship sometime next week

Steelers

I am nearing the final assembly phase for this cabinet. The next step is to install the 3 LED light bars on the top and sides of the cabinets interior.

The transformer to the LED's will sit under the shelf, which is removable. This could be used for storage but the design and size of the cabinet made a real storage space impractical.

This cabinet also features a different type of scoring system on one of the doors. The customer requested a series of holes numbered 1 through 20 for tracking a 4 person baseball game.

Kelly Family Crest

The next family crest cabinet is underway. I just surfaced the face of the doors and it's looking pretty good so far.

This is what it looked like just after the image transfer was completed. Big improvement!

Family Crests. A Trend?

Another family crest cabinet shipped out this week. This is a pretty popular request that I get. It's a perfect idea for a custom cabinet design.

Back on track

After some very wet weather in the NY area, the doors reacted to all the moisture and became quite warped. This has happened to me a few times in the past and luckily they have righted themselves after waiting for the moisture to level out. So we're finally back on track with this cabinet.

Regan Crest. First Half

The first half of the doors was engraved tonight.

The darkness in the wood is from the image transfer and will go away once I run the door through the surface planer.

Shop Report

My updates have been sparse over the last few weeks because I've been working 10+ hour days on the jobsite. This weekend I plan on having lots of time to catch up on the work going on in the shop so there should be several updates coming over the next few days.

Thanks for your patience. Have great Memorial Day weekend!

Steelers

I finished up the last 2 Superbowl logos and the Steelers logo last night. A couple of circles need to be routed out next and then the doors will get shaped to match the design the customer wants.

Another Family Crest Underway

Tonight I glued up some oak to form the door blanks for the first I two family crests I am making this month.

Next will be a surface planing to flatten out the doors and then I'll transfer the pattern onto the wood for the routing process.

Heading towards the finish line

A couple coats of polyurethane is all this needs and then it's out the door early next week.
